“Blood Roots”, an initiative of a few likeminded individuals of Kumily, was launched one year ago to provide an online system for donating and receiving blood in emergency situations. “Blood Roots” was set up by Kumiliites Sajimon Salim, Subin Varghese, Santhosh Kumar and K L Shyamala who are the driving force behind it.
To celebrate the first Anniversary of their launch, Blood Roots members and over 50 volunteers will be donating blood at the Kottayam Medical College on June 14. Those interested in participating or joining their initiative can also contact them with the details provided at the bottom of this article.
“Blood Roots” is also currently developing an app which will be beneficial for both Donors and patients. One of the organizers, Sajimon Salim informed that “although initially meant to serve only Idukki district, the mobile app which is being developed will serve the entire State”.
The Kumily Grama Panchayath President Shanthi Shajimon inaugurated the “Blood Roots” initiative last year on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day at Ranger Wood Auditorium, Thekkady. 14th June, is celebrated every year by countries around the world as World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
Those willing to donate blood and those patients in need of blood should register on the website www.bloodroots.org . This will enable patients to identify Donors who are nearby and they can then directly contact them.
