Today the 29th of July 2023 is being celebrated across the world as Global Tiger Day and we are pleased to mention that our own Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) has won the National Award as the best Tiger Sanctuary in India for the third time running.
Since this noble yet endangered creature continues to remain in an existential crisis Global Tiger Day has gained further significance and importance this year.
It has been reported that there are only around 4,000 of this species remaining in the world and of these India is the home of about 70 percent of these tigers. Since India is the home of most of these Tigers, it has become all the more important for us Indians to nurture and enable these magnificent beasts to increase in numbers.
As per the latest 2022 census report the number of tigers in PTR four years ago was only about 35 but now has risen to about 45, showing the tremendous amount of work being put in by the officials of the reserve to raise the number of cats in the reserve forests.
So on the occasion of this Global Tiger Day we at “Kumily Calling” salute the officials and staff of the Periyar Tiger Reserve on their laudable and worthy achievement.
