JAILER REVIEW: RAJINIKANTH SHINES BRIGHT IN YET ANOTHER GOOD COP GONE GREAT

0

By Our Staff Correspondent / Film Critic

Ranikanth’s latest offering to Indian Cinema, “Jailer” was released yesterday the 10th of August 2023 to an all India audience. The movie was also simultaneously released at Kumily and is currently running to jam packed audiences.

If bloodbaths by the dinner table aren’t a common occurrence in your home, you’re in for a bloody awakening with the new Superstar starrer, Jailer. Director, Nelson Dilipkumar’s latest black comedy is an action-packed thrill ride with a star-studded cast that is successful in catering to the whims of a pan-India audience, for the most part.

What begins as the tale of a patient grandpa and a bratty grandchild, moonlighting as a youtuber with a grand 96-subscriber-count, soon turns into the story of a man on the hunt for justice.

Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian is a retired jailer who devotes his time to happily polishing his son Arjun’s (Vasanth Ravi) shoes, running the occasional errand, and begrudgingly trying his hand as an amateur videographer.

In the film, Ramya Krishnan is a dedicated housewife and homebody named Vijaya. One would imagine Neelambari finally being able to experience her happy ending with her long-awaited beau in the story’s initial setting, but her screen time and character progression are unfortunately sidelined to make way for more important things; such as hammers and no happy endings.

Vasanth Ravi plays the role of a supposedly honest Assistant Commissioner of Police, tailing a mafia gang, in the business of smuggling expensive temple sculptures. When the Jailer’s son Arjun digs his heels into the dirt, he goes missing, and all hell breaks loose; quite literally.

What follows is a revenge plot turned on its head; alongside scattered pieces of dark humor, headless men, and a whole lot of guns.

Filled to the brim, with all the trappings of a commercial hit, Jailer picks up pace in the second half, taking its sweet time to establish the core storyline.

Varma (Vinayakan), the movie’s prime villain, makes a compelling case for his presence as a striking antagonist.

The magnificent Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Jackie Shroff, and Mirna Menon are small yet vital puzzle pieces of the iconic big picture that is Jailer.

Yogi Babu’s penchant for rephrasing classic Bharathiyar quotes and his not-so-gentle jabs add some much needed flavor to the film’s comedic realm. Anirudh Ravichander’s punchy tunes, on the other hand, efficiently underline Muthuvel’s ultimate transition from docile cat to blood-thirsty Tiger. Surrounded by his trusty group of snipers and friends in high places, Muthuvel Pandian is not merely a shadow of Rajinikanth’s Alex Pandian, but a captivating and relatively realistic 21st-century upgrade.

While the protagonist’s characterization is not short on its share of imperfections, Rajinikanth’s undeniable charisma and charm as a seasoned veteran are sure to win you over.

The film’s flashback has a younger Muthuvel proudly stating, “Inga na thaan kingu, naan vetchadhu thaan rules-u (I’m the king here. I make the rules).” And rightfully so. The king of Indian cinema is back and he’s not here to play, he’s out to win.

All in all Jailer is a must watch film for our Kumily audience…

THE RISKS OF USING EMOJIS: ARE EMOJIS DIGITAL SIGNATURES?

0

We now live in a digital world where we use text messages, memes and posts to communicate. In these texts, memes and posts we now frequently use emojis to communicate our thoughts and feelings in a creative manner. In fact these emojis are considered to be the first language of the digital world.

It has been observed that 92% of millennials now use emojis in their day to day communication and the use of emojis has now risen by 775% in the past three years. However, the use of emojis is now resulting in misunderstanding and confrontations which are leading to court battles. Statistics reveal that over the years, there has been a gradual rise in cases related to use of emojis being brought to the courts in many countries.

In June a judge in a Canadian Court ruled that a thumbs up emoji is as much as a valid signature as a physical signature and is legally binding. The case, in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan, was between a grain buyer Kent Mickleborough of South West Terminal, Ltd.; an independent farming company based in Canada and a farmer Chris Achter.

In March 2021 the company texted that it was looking to buy 86 tons of flax seed at 17 Canadian dollars, which translates to US $12.73, per bushel. The buyer, Kent Mickleborough, contacted farmer Chris Achter, who was interested in selling his seed, over the phone and texted him with an image of the contract for the sale requesting him to “please confirm flax contract to deliver the 86 tons of flax by November of that year.

Achter replied with a thumbs up emoji. However, Achter did not deliver the bushels that month and the market price for flax increased beyond the contractually offered rate during that time. Mickleborough had signed the contract physically and believed that Achter’s thumbs up emoji was a virtual signature on Achter’s part. When the seeds were not delivered Mickleborough sought judicial remedy.

Mickleborough and South West Terminal contended in their lawsuit that Achter’s thumbs up emoji was a virtual signature on his part to the contact. Achter denied the same and said that he had sent a thumbs up emoji only to confirm the receipt of the contract document and he was awaiting a physical copy to be signed by him.

Judge Timothy Keene who heard the case ultimately ruled that Achter’s “thumbs up” counted as a formal agreement of the contact with South West Terminal. The court acknowledged that a “thumbs up” emoji was a non-traditional means to ‘sign’ a document but nevertheless under the circumstances it could be construed as a valid way to convey the two purposes of a ‘signature’.

In his decision Judge Keene further remarked that the case reflected a “new reality in Canadian society” and that the legal system would now have to contend with emojis beyond the “thumbs up” sign as a regular part of conversation and expression between people. He therefore ruled that Farmer Achter had to pay damages to the tune of 61,000 Canadian dollars.

More cases related to emojis are now happening across the world. In 2016 a French Court convicted a Man of threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun emoji and punished him with 6 months in prison and a 1200 dollar fine.

In 2017 in a case of stalking in New Zealand the accused was sent to jail for 8 months on the basis of an emoji sent by him. In India, during 2018 a criminal case was filed against 46 BSNL  Employees who responded to a lady’s official communication in a WhatsApp Group with an emoji of “smiley face with tears” were charged with sexual harassment. Luckily for them The Madras High Court quashed the case and found them not guilty of sexual harassment.

Attorneys now stand up in court to argue the different interpretations of emojis such as knives and hearts. A heart emoji emoji sent by a Manager to a female employee can be termed as sexual harassment by the HR Department of the company.

While emojis allow us to be colourfully creative they can also lead to misinterpretation. Just as in the spoken word so too in emojis, it may be difficult to pinpoint the intent or meaning behind the communication. One emoji can have multiple meanings. While a like in the form of a thumbs up emoji can be given as an approval or confirmation of a view, youngsters today also use it sarcastically.

So think before you press the emoji of your choice…

CELEBRATING GLOBAL TIGER DAY: PTR IS THE BEST IN INDIA

0

Today the 29th of July 2023 is being celebrated across the world as Global Tiger Day and we are pleased to mention that our own Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) has won the National Award as the best Tiger Sanctuary in India for the third time running.

Since this noble yet endangered creature continues to remain in an existential crisis Global Tiger Day has gained further significance and importance this year.

It has been reported that there are only around 4,000 of this species remaining in the world and of these India is the home of about 70 percent of these tigers. Since India is the home of most of these Tigers, it has become all the more important for us Indians to nurture and enable these magnificent beasts to increase in numbers.

As per the latest 2022 census report the number of tigers in PTR four years ago was only about 35 but now has risen to about 45, showing the tremendous amount of work being put in by the officials of the reserve to raise the number of cats in the reserve forests.

So on the occasion of this Global Tiger Day we at “Kumily Calling” salute the officials and staff of the Periyar Tiger Reserve on their laudable and worthy achievement.

REMEMBERING THE TELEGRAM: TEN YEARS AFTER

0

I am sure most of us will remember the facility called the telegram which existed before the days of convergence; the era of mobiles, Facebook or Instagram when the world was analog and urgent messages were sent through this facility called the Telegram.

It was on 15th July 2013 that the Government of India decided to discontinue the 160-year-old telegram service in India due to massive losses, sparking a feeling of nostalgia amongst civil society and the media. Digitalisation of communication resulted in making the Telegram obsolete since all forms of news could be communicated across any distance with a simple mobile call or a message on the internet

It is now ten years since Telegrams were discontinued and we at “Kumily Calling” would like to honour this with cherished memories and would also like to hear your experiences with the telegram.

The Telegram was used to deliver both good and bad tidings with a sense of urgency. It used to be delivered by a humble postman who cycled miles across the hinterland and was the bearer of urgent news through the telegram which connected the world to places in many a land.

Its arrival across the world in any a household brought about a sense of the ominous for it could convey sad news in a manner which was very cold and abrupt as we opened it with tremulous hands wondering what the news would be. At times it brought us good news; a greeting or news of a birth or news of a job or a call for an interview which made us jump with joy. It also brought us news of bereavement or sickness of beloved few and then did make us mourn.

Though the telegram appeared curt and terse with sentences printed in capital letters its messages were far more important and could put to shame most editors by stripping the message to very basic words to shorten the message and thus reduce the cost to the sender.

The most dramatic of all these features was the word “STOP” at the end of every sentence since a simple dot as a full stop was not acceptable in the language of Morse code which was all about dots and dashes.

Some notable milestones in the History of Telegrams in India are given below:

The first experimental electric telegraph line was started between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour during 1850.

In 1851 it was opened for the use of the British East India Company

A separate department was opened for telegraph facilities in 1854.

The Indian Telegraph Act was introduced in India during 1885

India moved from cable telegraph to wireless telegraph in 1902.

On 1st April, 1914 Post Office and Telegraph departments were merged and Indian Posts and Telegraph Department was formed.

From 1st January 1985 Post Offices were separated from Telegraph and department was bifurcated in to Department of Posts and Department of Telecommunications.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) was established in 2000 by the Government of India, which provided a wide range of telecommunication services including Telegrams.

In order to keep pace with technological developments BSNL introduced Web Based Telegraph Messaging System in India by 31st March 2010. The WTMS changed the way of sending telegrams through computers.

Realizing the declining usage of Telegraph Services, the Establishment branch of BSNL Corporate Office defined Telegraph Services as diminishing services vide the circular No. 19-1/2009/TE-II dated 19th February 2010.

The international telegraph service was terminated by BSNL on April 30, 2011.

BSNL decided to discontinue the Telegram Service and issued circular on 11th June 2013. It was also requested to all telegraph offices to take photograph of booking of five telegrams message with sender of telegrams and all the staff working on WMTS on 14th July 2103 which was the last working day of telegrams and to keep record of such photographs in an album and to send one set of such photographs to Sr. GM’s. Office.

The Telegram facility may be no more but it still remains fresh in our memory. We welcome the memories of Kumilites who have used the telegram service and have some fond memories to share.

NEW TRAIN SERVICE BRINGS RAILWAYS CLOSER TO KUMILY

0

The Southern Railways have commenced a new train service from Thursday the 15th of June 2023 connecting the town of Bodinayakanur on the Tamil Nadu border with Kerala to Chennai Central Station leading to great happiness on both sides of the Kerala – Tamil Nadu Border.

L. Murugan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying flagged off the first train at Bodinayakanur on Thursday the 15th of June 2023. The train will depart from Bodinayakanur to Chennai on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and reach the Chennai Central Railway station the next day morning with an approximate journey time of 11 hours 30 minutes. The return journey will commence from Chennai Central on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

As a result, Bodinayakanur on the Tamil Nadu side of the interstate border becomes the nearest railway station to Kumily in Idukki district at a distance of approximately 65 kilometres. Incidentally, Bodinayakkanur, is only about 27 kilometres away from the border village of Bodimettu and about 70 kilometres from Munnar town.

The new service is expected to give greater impetus to Kumily’s Tourism and Commerce Sectors. Earlier, until 2010 the Bodi – Madurai line was a metre gauge track and passengers had to switch trains from Madurai to go onwards to Chennai as, the Madurai-Chennai route had been converted to a broad-gauge track.

It is expected that the new rail service will bring down costs of goods and products originating from Kumily as well as speed up the process of shipment. The new service is also expected to benefit pilgrims who travel to Sabarimala Temple every year.

The regular services of train No. 20601/20602 Chennai Central – Bodinayakkanur – Chennai – Central Express will commence from Chennai on June 16 and from Bodinayakkanur on June 18.

It is said that the Railways is considering the possibility of laying a new line up to Sabarimala via Kumily and the people of Kumily hope that it will soon become a reality.

By Anjaly Rajendran

While Kumily has good schools for the kids of the town, not many may know that it also has a small school for the differently abled called “Buds Special School”.

“Buds Special School” at Vellaramkunnu celebrated its Entrance Festival 2023-24 yesterday, the 8th of June 2023 to welcome the new entrants to the school. The School which was founded in 2013 currently has 35 students including the 8 new admissions who were welcomed during the Festival.

The festival though small is of great significance for the efforts taken to integrate the differently abled into the main stream of Society. The new admissions to the school were adorned with golden crowns and given gifts to encourage and motivate them in their academic efforts.

The School’s Admissions Festival was inaugurated by our Kumily Gram Panchayat President Shrimati. Shanthi Sajimon while the function was chaired by Shri. V K  Babu Kutty , Vice President of the Kumily Gram Panchayat. Shrimati. Nolly Joseph, Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Welfare Matters of the Kumily Gram Panchayat, welcomed the gathering.

Buds Special School is yet to be recognised and has classes from 1st to 12th Grade. The school is Co-educational and it doesn’t have an attached pre-primary section. The school has been provided a building by the Panchayat from which it currently operates.

In spite of limited infrastructure and facilities the School is doing yeoman service by brining academic education to the differently abled and thus integrating them into the mainstream.

We would be happy if the philanthropists of Kumily support this most deserving school and help it to grow bigger.
