By Anjaly Rajendran

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on the 5th of June to create awareness of issues that affect our environmental and action to overcome these issues. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5th June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Over the years WED has developed as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, rise in sea-level and food security, among others. This year marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day and will focus on solutions to plastic pollution.

During this year’s World Environment Day (WED), celebrations were held in Kumily on 5th June 2023 under the auspices of the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR). As part of the celebrations an awareness rally was held at Kumily in which members of the public, students, officials of the Tiger Reserve and members of the Eco-Development Committees participated.

The Kumily Gram Panchayat President Shrimati. Shanti Shajimon inaugurated the celebrations and flagged of the rally. The current Assistant Deputy Director of PTR Shri. P J Suhaib who is heading the Reserve in the absence of the Deputy Director cum Secretary of the Periyar Tiger Conservation Foundation (PTCF) welcomed those who attended the event.

In connection with WED a Biodiversity Forestry Club has been formed by the Periyar Tiger Conservation Foundation (PTCF) in which school and college children have become members. As part of this WED, students from St. Dominic College, Kanjirapally and CMS College, Kottayam had been assigned to survey the Bio diversity of their region and catalogue all plants and other life forms found there. This task was carried out as a three day exercise by the Post Graduate Students of the Botany and Zoology Departments of these Colleges. The Report presented by the Students was then handed over during the celebrations.

Apart from that, medicinal plant seedlings were also distributed to the students.  During the past, fruit trees and other trees with value were distributed but for the first time herbs are being distributed with more emphasis on planting medicinal herbs around the houses and gardens of the students as part of the Mission Life program of the Government of India.

During the celebrations held on WED this year participation certificates from PTR were also distributed to the students who took part in the various projects of the PTR.

The former Idukki District Panchayat President Jiji K Philip also addressed the students from St. Joseph High School Vandiperiyar, Tribal Upper Primary School Kumily, CMS College Kottayam and St. Dominic College Kanjirappalli who participated.

The celebrations were a great success and served to nourish the young minds of Kumily; thus providing hope for the future.

RAIL-HEAD TO CHENNAI COMES CLOSER TO KUMILY

0

Yes, it’s official now. From 16th June 2023, travellers from Kumily who are travelling to Madurai and Chennai can now board a train closer to home.

The Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting as well as Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri. L Murugan, will flag off the direct train from Chennai to Bodinayakanoor via Madurai and Theni on June 15.

Earlier trains would run only until Theni but the same has now been extended to Bodi, making it easier for residents in the border towns of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to travel by train.

A circular issued by the Southern Railways mentions that “Extension of Train Number 20602 Madurai – MGR Chennai Central express to Bodinayakanur (Tri-Weekly) and Extension of Train Number 06702 Theni – Madurai unreserved express special (daily) to Bodinayakanur will be flagged of by MoS L Murugan on June 15.”

Currently only buses are the option to travel directly to Chennai and the luxury omni buses charge anywhere between 1000 to 2100 rupees for one way travel. This has handicapped the common man who is dependent upon the State Transport buses to travel between Kumily and Madras.

While the fare of the State Transport buses is only about 600 rupees (one way) for an adult there is only one bus which is direct and passengers have to break journey and change buses at multiple points to reach Chennai or Kumily. Moreover the direct bus takes about 16 hours to reach Chennai from Kumily or vice versa.

Therefore, it is expected that the renewed broad gauge line via Theni to Bodinayakanur will now enable easier access for Tourists from Tamil Nadu who would like to visit Kumily / Thekkady, and the people of Kumily who wish to travel to Chennai.
